Hewitt-Washington & Associates Receives the Golden Hammer,
Reflects on 22-Year History

NEW ORLEANS – The Mayor’s Office of Housing and Neighborhood Development recently honored Hewitt-Washington & Associates with two Golden Hammer Awards for Excellence in Architecture. The first award recognized the firm for its contributions to the New Orleans community and its commitment to quality building design. The second honor was received for the firm’s participation in the design consortium, Convention Center III Architects. The Consortium provided design and construction administration services for the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Phase III Expansion. The Phase III Expansion has been nationally recognized for its outstanding design that includes a state-of-the-art auditorium.

Both Lonnie Hewitt, Jr. and James R. Washington, Jr. were honored to receive the awards for the firm’s work. The new millennium marked 22 years of operation for the small-sized firm that counts the Aquarium of the Americas, the Convention Center and the McDonald’s on St. Charles Avenue as three of its most notable projects. "We do big things, but we’re a small firm," said Hewitt. The two partners started the firm in 1978 shortly after completing college at Southern University’s School of Architecture where the two met. High professional standards and excellent work performance inspired the young architects and today they are proud of their accomplishments. "Hewitt and I understood what it meant to have people around you who were above average when it came to their work performance. We wanted to create a firm to give those types of individuals great opportunities," said Washington.

Currently, the firm is designing a variety of projects including elementary schools, churches, business offices and more. Both partners agree that there is more to the craft than just designing buildings and the accolades that they have received proves that they have gone beyond the task of designing to erect bricks and mortar.
